Location Planner

What it does

Save places you want to shoot, organize them into lists, and see them on a map or in a list. An optional overlay draws the sun and moon rise and set directions on the map so you can judge a spot before you go.

What you need

• A signed-in account. Signed out, the screen shows a message with Sign In and Create Account buttons instead of the map.
• A network connection for the map, place search, and saving.
• Location permission only for Use current location, sorting by distance, and Compass View (iPhone only). Everything else works without it.

How to use it

1. Type in Search for a place... and pick a result, or tap a point of interest on the map. An info card opens for the place.
2. Tap Save to keep it. Saved places appear as pins. Type into Notes on the card to add notes, or use Add photo to attach photos.
3. Tap Add to list on a saved place to file it under a list. Use the list chips above the map to create a list, rename or remove one, or switch between All, your lists, and Unlisted. On a phone the chips collapse into a dropdown.
4. Use the source picker to switch between My Spots and Wikipedia. Wikipedia shows nearby places from Wikipedia. If the map is zoomed out too far, it asks you to zoom in. Tap Save pin on one to keep it as your own.
5. Tap Show list to see your locations as a list, and Show map to go back.
6. Tap Filter locations to narrow by City, State, Country, and Photos (Has photos or Doesn't have photos). Clear resets it.
7. In list view, tap Sort locations and choose A-Z, Newest, or Distance.

Other buttons on a card: Directions, Show on map (from the list), and Delete pin, which asks you to confirm first.

Sun and moon directions

Tap Show sun and moon directions. A crosshair marks the center of the map, and lines run from it toward Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, and Moonset. Pan the map to move the origin. A card lists each event's time and lets you show or hide each line. Pick another date with the date chip, or drag the time dial to see live sun and moon direction lines for that time. Reset to current time returns the dial to now.

Reading the results

Distance sorting measures from your current location. If access is denied, the sort sheet says location access is needed.

Tips

• Change map type cycles the map style.
• Turn on compass view (iPhone only) rotates the map to match the way your phone is facing. A compass dial appears on the map with N, E, S, and W marked, and a chip at the top shows your heading in degrees with what you are facing, such as FACING NNE. It reads FINDING HEADING... until the first reading arrives. With the sun and moon overlay on, the chip names an event (such as sunrise) when you face within about 12 degrees of its line. A red compass button appears when the map is turned, and it snaps back to north.
• From Light Conditions or Moon Phase, View on Map opens this screen at that place with the overlay already on.
